Harmonizing EHS risk management across a multi-site international group
A large international engineering group works on a very high number of assignments in a multi-site context around the world, spanning several lines of business and several entities. Over time, this growth led to the coexistence of several management systems, inconsistent local practices, and tools that each met a specific need without communicating with one another. In some cases, inspections were tracked in Excel and audits in Word documents; some information was escalated through shared spaces, while other information was kept in local tools or standalone files. This fragmentation made any consolidated, coherent, and usable reading of EHS oversight difficult at the group level.
Centralizing EHS document management to make field data reliable
The problem was not simply about documents. The information existed, but it remained fragmented. EHS managers found it hard to bring together audit results, lessons learned, accidents, field visits, and action plans. Another layer of complexity was added to this: depending on the country, the activity, and the contractual context, levels of safety-culture maturity varied widely.
Breaking down EHS data silos to improve risk oversight
The main challenge was to move away from working in silos. It was not just about replacing paper forms or Word files with a digital tool, but about creating a system that could connect the data and turn it into a genuine oversight lever. The group wanted a common base to centralize EHS information, harmonize practices, and above all cross-reference data to better understand hazardous situations, gaps in maturity, and areas for improvement.
Another structuring challenge concerned reporting methods on an international scale: team organization and management styles differed from one country to the next. The solution therefore had to be robust enough to carry group-wide standards while remaining adaptable to local realities.
Structuring EHS oversight with the BlueKanGo digital platform
The group chose to deploy the BlueKanGo EHS solution to gradually structure its EHS oversight. The rollout began with a few targeted uses before being expanded over time. The first applications covered safety talks, HSE visits, and certain field inspections. As needs became clearer, the BlueKanGo platform was enriched to cover a much broader scope. Today it supports several foundational processes, including accident reports, lessons learned, audits, drill tracking, personal protective equipment (PPE) tracking, action plans, and various inspection or management-visit initiatives.
Adapting a digital EHS solution to international and local requirements
The solution was also designed to work in an international environment. In particular, two separate language environments were set up, with forms adapted to different contexts. For accident reporting, for example, the process was structured around harmonized internal tracking, while human resources then handle the regulatory steps specific to each country. This setup lets the group maintain a usable database at the global level while meeting local requirements. The platform is also not just for EHS managers: it is used by managers, human resources, operational teams, and, in certain specific cases, by external parties involved in particular industrial projects.
What results can you expect from digitalised, connected EHS oversight?
The big benefit BlueKanGo brings, beyond centralizing and harmonizing practices, is its ability to cross-reference information within dynamic dashboards. This shift in logic is what has transformed EHS tracking the most. It becomes possible to analyze together the data that previously lived separately (lessons learned, accidents, audits, inspections, identified hazards, corrective actions, or field reports). This cross-cutting reading not only makes it possible to better understand the issues, but also to pinpoint the areas where no information is coming through. That is a major lever in building a truly international safety culture.
